The date when humanity’s utilization of ecological resources and services surpasses Earth’s capacity to replenish them within a given year is known as Earth Overshoot Day.
For the year 2023, Earth Overshoot Day is observed on August 2. This indicates that our current lifestyle necessitates the utilization of 1.7 Earths.
Earth Overshoot Day has been progressively advancing in the calendar, and unless we initiate alterations, we will ultimately find ourselves running out of time. Back in 1970, Earth Overshoot Day occurred on December 19.
There are several measures we can adopt to assist in pushing Earth Overshoot Day further into the year:
- Diminish our consumption of meat and dairy products;
- Reduce reliance on motor vehicles and opt for walking, cycling, or utilizing public transportation more frequently;
- Opt for whole foods over processed foods;
- Promote recycling and composting practices;
- Conserve water and energy resources;
